Both my daughter and I are huge fans of tomatoes!
We love them fresh and canned, basically any way we can eat them.
Canned tomatoes are defintely a pantry staple at our house. I most often use diced tomatoes, whole tomatoes or tomato sauce and some of the recipes that use those are reader favorites here on the blog!
Everyone raves about our Tomato Basil Garlic Noodle Soup, Cream Cheese Chicken Enchiladas and Sausage and White Bean Soup.
Head on over and give them a try! These recipes are the perfect comfort foods to make when it's cold outside.
This soup is not only tasty, but it's SO easy to make! It tastes amazing and the leftovers refrigerate well for lunch or dinner the next day.

I recently discovered Pomi Tomatoes. Their tomatoes are packaged in stay fresh, BPA free cartons and are 100% natural!
No additives or preservatives... just straight up tomatoes.
I couldn't wait to try them and knew they would be a great in this soup. The Pomi Chopped Tomatoes are like diced tomatoes in other brands and the Strained Tomatoes were more like a thick tomato sauce.
I find them at Walmart, or order them from Amazon, if you're not able to find them locally.
I chose to cook the pasta separately in this recipe because I'm not a fan of mushy noodles.
We usually have cooked pasta in the fridge most days, to make meal prep quicker and easier on those busy weeknights.
We serve this soup with a salad, sandwich or a chunk of crusty bread for dipping.
It's a favorite at our house and an internet favorite! It currently has over 200,000 pins on Pinterest with many reviews and comments over there.
You can or substitute with the following ingredients:
- diced bell pepper
- ground turkey or pork
- shredded cheese
- chili powder
- crushed red pepper flakes
- red kidney beans
- raw baby spinach
- shredded carrots
- fresh basil

ReplyDeleteThis looks very good! Can you tell me is the measurement for the pasta at three cups dry or three cups once cooked? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Rena! You'll want 3 cups of pasta after it's been cooked! :)
DeleteOops, that's what I did wrong lol
DeleteOops, that's what I did wrong lol
DeleteI mean I know it says cooked, but i didn't know if that was directly relating to the measurement or whether you were saying add it cooked, don't let it cook in the soup liquid. :)
ReplyDeleteMy kids are gonna love this soup. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!! So glad you stopped by and enjoy!

ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you liked it! Thanks so much for the feedback and for stopping by!! :)
DeleteI wondered if you could do that. I've made a few recipes where you just throw uncooked pasta in. Saves time😊
Deletemmm . . . I would totally eat this :)

ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome, Marsha! This is such a great comfort food!
DeleteSheena...this looks sooooo good! I love soup so much, I eat it all year round! But especially in the fall, I love to make a pot of soup on Sunday that will last much of the week. This has been added to my pinterest must make list! : )
ReplyDeletewhat kind of steak seasoning is used?
ReplyDeleteI purchased the steak seasoning I used from Aldi, but any brand would work! Thanks for stopping by!

ReplyDeleteI'm SO glad you liked it, Donna! :)
DeleteThis recipe really sounds delicious! It reminds me of a recipe that my Mom used to make.
ReplyDeleteI literally just put all ingredients (browned the meat first) into my crock pot for tonight's dinner...Can't wait to try it..
ReplyDeleteMade this last night for dinner, but added some mixed veggies. It was so, so tasty, even better leftover tonight. Those Pomi tomatoes are delicious and I will definitely use those in things from now on. Was very glad to find them at a local store.
ReplyDeleteThis looks very much like something my mother used to make. I instantly felt the cozy comfort of home when I looked at the photos. What seasoning could I use to replace the steak seasonings. I have a large collection of herbs and spices, so I never really but pre-mixed seasonings.

ReplyDeleteSheena......Looks yummy! Can you tell me how many servings this makes? I'm bringing it for a "soup potluck" and need to serve a certain number of people. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI would estimate about 6 servings!
DeleteSounds so good. Pinned, shared & can't wait to try.
ReplyDeleteCan you freeze this?
ReplyDeleteI have not tried freezing it, but it's definitely worth a try! My only concern is that the pasta may be mushy when defrosting, but I can't say for sure. Thanks!
DeleteCan you freeze this?
ReplyDeleteI have been using Pomi tomatoes for years! I make sausage & peppers & potatoes with them, I use them for my spaghetti sauce --- everythin you need tomato sauce for. You can add your own spices and can do anything with them; the fresh taste is amazing! I cannot wait to try this soup : ! It kind of looks like something my grandmother made and I might just add a can of sweet corn (drained)to it. OK... gotta go.. making it right now! :)
ReplyDeleteThey don't carry those types of tomatoes by me, can you provide substitutes?
ReplyDeleteThey don't carry those types of tomatoes by me, can you provide substitutes?
ReplyDeleteHi! How many would you say this serves?
ReplyDeleteI love stoups! This sounds delicious, thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMade this soup today. Added celery, green pepper & carrot. Simply delish. Ate two servings.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you liked it! Thanks for letting me know!
DeleteCan't wait to try this. Do I drain the fat from the ground beef and onion mixture before adding the rest of the ingredients? By the way, I found the Pomi tomatoes online at Walmart.
ReplyDeleteDoes it mean two containers of tomatoes or is that a typo?
ReplyDeleteVery great post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted
ReplyDeleteto say that I have really loved surfing around your
blog posts. In any case I will be subscribing in your
feed and I'm hoping you write again soon!
cant you use can sauce instead never saw that sauce in my supermarket
ReplyDeleteCanned sauce would work great too!
Deletewe have been using this recipe for years now and it's the favorite soup in our house. Best of all it's better the next day.
ReplyDeleteMy family loves this soup. We simply call it M-T-H for Macaroni Tomatoes & Hamburger. A great depression era soup that is filling and goes far. I add a can of tomato juice and cut down the amount of water because we like it with more tomato taste. Great for cold days.
ReplyDeleteI love your name for the soup! Thanks so much for stopping by!
DeleteI loved how easy and fast this was. The beef broth and hint of brown sugar was tasty. I think next time I will try it with some red pepper flakes. Soup weather is just getting started so I really appreciate this new recipe. Thank you for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Deletebeen making this for decades,i like it with stewed tomatoes but pomi tomatoes work great as well.!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is delicious! I did include diced yellow bell pepper and used Ditalini pasta instead to keep everything uniform...so tasty, thank you!
ReplyDeleteOK, my second comment...after I just finished a second bowl of this soup... I'm a complete pasta-lover, but if you worry about carbs, this soup is so good, I bet you could just bump up the amount of veggies: more onion, bell peppers, add carrot, celery, sweet potato maybe. Love the above suggested options to include - maybe next time I'll mix it up. Again, thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
Deletewhat exactly is steak seasoning? I have montreal steak seasoning.
ReplyDeleteMontreal is what I used, but any steak seasoning mixture would work. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteWe have a friend that ran a restaurant in North Dakota and my father would always get her hamburger soup, it was marvelous and every year when we go up there since my father has died she makes it for us when we go over to her house and have it for lunch. My mom said this is even better then that!!😋
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear that! Thanks for commenting!
