You can never go wrong with a vintage recipe from an old church cookbook! Today's recipe for Old Fashioned Apple Cake is completely homemade, moist and so flavorful! Each bite of this cake bursts with delicious cinnamon and apple flavor.

This simple cake is the perfect size for a smaller fall gathering or party. It's great served as is, or top it with some powdered sugar or our favorite cream cheese frosting. You could even serve it for dessert at Thanksgiving.

Recipe tips and substitution ideas:

  • We used green apples for this recipe, but any apple would work great. Greek yogurt can be used instead of sour cream.

Old Fashioned Apple Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups peeled, chopped apples

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9 inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the sour cream, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined. Fold in the chopped apples.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a cake tester or toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar or frost with cream cheese frosting, if desired.
  8. Slice and serve.
