The entire supply of cranberries for the United States is grown and harvested in just 5 states (Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington).

That does not mean that I can't grow them my own in my back yard. It just means that they are incredibly finicky and require acidic soil, plenty of moisture, and about a third of the year in pretty chill or cold temperatures (approximately 45°F).

These persnickety perennials deserve to be picky. They are a VIP fruit categorized as a superfood. Cranberries not only contain multiple vitamins and antioxidants, they are all around health boosters; from your digestive track to your teeth. While they are known for their tart flavor, the right combinations can turn them into a tasty treat.

Raspberries are the perfect ingredient to help balance the tartness of the cranberries. Sugar, and the addition of vanilla extract, really compliment the flavor of the cranberries and raspberries. Cranberry sauce with raspberries is also great with orange juice or zest added in.

Such an easy twist on traditional cranberry sauce. It is so delicious!

Now I do love regular, traditional cranberry sauce from scratch, but even the best cranberry sauce is made better with the addition of raspberries.  This recipe is heavenly and so amazing. Made with preferably but not mandatory fresh cranberries and frozen raspberries, this sauce is SO addicting! This is your warning to be prepared to want to eat it by the spoonful or even pile it on your plate as it's own side dish!

This homemade Cranberry Raspberry Sauce is really a family favorite during the fall holidays.

It goes perfectly with a ham or turkey Thanksgiving or Christmas meal. But if you do happen to have leftover cranberry raspberry sauce, before running to get that spoon, just know that this sauce is freezer friendly too. Either in a container or a ziploc, just make sure to get as much air out as possible to avoid freezer burns.

When you are ready to feast again, just set it in the fridge to thaw overnight. It's great added to quesadillas and sandwiches made with leftover turkey or you can use it to make a tasty cranberry drink or punch. It can even be used as a relish. . Sometimes, I make a batch just to use in other recipes.

    Cranberry Raspberry Sauce

    Ingredients

    • 1 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 cup water
    • 3 cups fresh cranberries
    • 1 cup frozen raspberries
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Instructions

    1. Combine all ingredients in a medium size saucepan over medium high heat.
    2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until mixture starts to thicken, stirring frequently.
    3. Using a potato masher, mash the cranberries until you reach the consistency you like. I leave about half my berries whole, and half mashed.
    4. Cook for another 5 minutes. Remove from heat, cool slightly to thicken more and serve!
