Sunday is always a big comfort food day for me and my family! There's nothing like sitting down to a delicious Sunday morning breakfast, or Sunday afternoon dinner.

This morning we ventured over to my sister, Shantel's house for an amazing Sunday breakfast!

I linked her Instagram above, because she is amazing and is currently restoring a 1918 farm house and posts about her adventures! Head over and give her a follow!

She made us some Biscuits and Gravy, and Sausage Hash Brown Egg Casserole from the new-ish cookbook by Joanna Gaines, Magnolia Table: A Collection of Recipes for Gathering.

The biscuits and gravy was out of this world good, and the breakfast casserole was pretty tasty, too!

If you have or are purchasing the cookbook, make sure to give the biscuits a try!

Today's recipe is total comfort food and would go perfect with any Sunday dinner!

I've had red rice prepared a few different ways throughout the last few years. This recipe for Riz Gras aka Fat Rice is a red rice recipe originating from Burkina Faso that I made a few years back. A friend is originally from the West African country and wanted some food like his family made at home so we gave it a try.

Also, more common is Spanish or Mexican red rice like this one I've made!

This Southern Bacon Red Rice is somewhat similar to both of the recipes above, but with different ingredients and seasonings.

Southern red rice originated from West African Slaves and now has become a traditional meal is some southern households, especially near the coast in Georgia and South Carolina.

The bacon is the star of this rice recipe in my opinion! I love that you use the bacon grease to cook the onions. It adds SO much flavor!

I also love the texture of this rice. I'm a fan of rice that is on the dry side versus saucy and this recipe is exactly that.

It's budget friendly and the recipe makes enough for a large family, or small family and you'll have leftovers. This recipe is great re-heated for lunch the next day.

Rice is in some of my favorite recipes and I enjoy eating it often, so this recipe will be going back on the menu plan soon!

Even my picky daughter, Ella gave it a try and ended up eating the whole plate. I call that a win even if she picked out all the bacon and scooped it to the edge of the plate!

My Dad is pretty amazing when it comes to finding vintage items for my sister's and I!

Check out the awesome bacon grease container he cleaned up and gifted to me a few years ago!

This container is a set of five and I have it on display above my vintage Pyrex collection in my dining area!

I thought I would share it in this post since the recipe has SO much bacon goodness!

I love saving my bacon grease for future meals! I use this one on Amazon for storing mine at home.

  1. This came out pretty good. I had to cook the rice a lot longer, add more water and broth and simmer.. add a little bit more hot sauce but, everyone has a different type of stove, so temperatures vary, it is spot on and I think it is a delicious rice. 2 cups make a whole lot.. I will make this again. I enjoyed this with fresh vegetables when I made it for the first try.
